Bends Send 2 Divers To HospitalTwo Navy divers, suffering from the bends, were rescued by helicopter Thursday from Santa Rosa Island after a diving accident, the Coast Guard reported.One of the divers, Lt. Peter Juneman, was in serious condition today at the Naval Hospital, Port Hueneme. He was flown to the hospital unconscious and has undergone hours of decompression treatment, with more scheduled, officials said.The other diver, P. O. Dallas Swank, was treated at the hospital for a mild case of air embolism, or the bends.The accident occurred during a dive at noon when Juneman’s life jacket inflated at 40 feet, shooting him to the surface. The two men became entangled, with Swank wrenching free 20 feet below the surface while the other diver continued upward.A helicopter dispatched from Point Mugu flew the two divers to the hospital at 1:30 p.m. where Juneman immediately underwent six hours of decompression.Both men were off a minesweeper operating in the area out of San Diego.
