Rudolph Hartwell, Chief of Surgery at Radford Community Hospital from. _1946_ to 1^65, has been added to the staff at RAAP..Dr, Hartwell studied Pre-Med at VP I, received his M. D. Degree from the Medical Collegeof Virginia in 1929, then went to New YorkTost-gradimte Medical School and Hospital ‘ for training in surgery, ; •From 1934 to 1941, he operated a private hospital in Bedford,1 Virginia.In 1941, he went on active duty as a Lt. Commander at the TJ. S, Naval hospital In' Ports-1 mouthy Virginia; In'late 194 l j he was assigned duty on the XT, S. S. vWasp. The ship was torpedoed by the Japanese with the loss of about 300 iinen, when the ship sank in the Coral Sea. After six hours in the water, Commander Hartwell was rescued and assigned shore duty for three years. He was then assigned to the battleship XJ, S, S. South .Dakota. Commander Hartwell was then promoted to Captain, and witnessed the signing of the surrender of the Japanese on the IT, S. S, Missouri in Tokyo Bay, August 1945.Dr. Hartwell and wife Juliette C. reside at 1202 Far ragut Drive, Radford. They have one son H. Rudolph Jr. and three granddaughters.
