Marinesdie in coptercollision5 injured during maneuvers in Nevada desertBy Linda StewartThe RegisterTwo female Marines from Orange County were killed on Memorial Day weekend and five other soldiers were injured when a pair of Sea Knight helicopters from the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station collided while on maneuvers Saturday over the Nevada desert. The dead were identified as Sgt. Brenda L. Schroeder, 29, a field radio operator, and Cpl. Lisa D. Tutt, 22, a unit clerk, both of Santa Ana, said Master Sgt. Steve Merrill, a spokesman for the El Toro base. The accident occurred about 8:45 a.m. during a training exercise about eight miles southeast of Fallon, Nev., authorities said. The cause of the accident was under investigation. It was a routine training flight,” said Capt. Katie Haddock, public affairs officer for the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing at Fallon Naval Air Station.Basically, they (Schroeder and Tutt) were not part of the crew aboard the aircraft. They were on the aircraft so they could become familiar with getting on and getting off a helicopter,” Haddock said.It looks like the one (helicopter) they were in, the tail propeller may have hit the other aircraft. The second aircraft’s forward part is lying about 1,000 meters from the back,” Haddock said. The two Sea Knight helicopters were assigned to the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron, a troop-transport unit, in El Toro. The squadron arrived at Fallon last week to participate in operation High Roller,” a two-week exercise designed to test combat readiness of the 4th Marine Air Wing.It was the second crash this year involving CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters. On March 15, four crewmen from the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station were killed in South Korea when their helicopter crashed after dropping off 16 soldiers.Marine Corps spokesmen said that survivors apparently were able to walk away from Saturday’s crash. They were treated for minor injuries. Those injured were Col. George J. O’Connell Jr. of Mission Viejo, Lt. Col. W. Tom Reid of Lake Elsi-Please see MARINES/10
