ChaplianPlansSermonPentecost Sunday will be observed at St. John’s United Church of Christ Sunday at the 11 a. m. worship service with the reception of members, recognition of graduates, and the sermon by a U. S. Navy Chaplain.Lt. Commander Wade H. Curran Jr., Chaplain Corps of the U. S. Navy, and member of St. John’s Church, will deliver the sermon. A native of Kannapolis, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Catawba College and his Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Divinity School of Yale University. He was pastor of the Beck's United Church of Christ, Lexington, before entering the chaplain’s corps in 1965. His ministerial standing is held by the Western North Carolina Association of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ.Upon the completion of his assignment at the Naval Base in Newport, R. I., he was assigned for two years as a member of the staff of Destroyer Division 232, with homeport in Long Beach, Calif. During this assignment, he made two tours to Vietnam. From 1967-69 he was assigned to the staff of the 5th Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif. From 1969-71, he was assigned as senior chaplain of the U. S. Navy Communication Station on Guam, Mariana Islands. On June 15 he will begin his assignment as senior chaplain, staff, service Squadron Eight, Norfolk, Va. In this assignment, his ministry will be to 30 ships in the Atlantic Fleet.He is married to the former Miss Annie Lou Cook of Kannapolis. They have three children.Also at the service of worship, the Confirmation Class will be among those to be received into the full membership of the church. This class has been under the guidance of the pastor, Rev. Mark W. Andes. The class includes Cindy Andes, Kathy Curran, Tracy Stiller, Jo Anna Stephens, Reed Hall and Todd Williford.The high school graduates who are members of St. John’s Church will be recognized at the service. These include Larry Ridenhour, Lynn Jones, Julia Sechler, Linda Faulkenberry and Nancy Hollopeter.
