Vets• Continued from A-l was getting into it, so we decided to remove it before everything was destroyed.”A little worse for the wear, the refurbished copper box and its contents will find a home at the memorial once again when it is placed in Erie County Veterans Memorial Park where the Spanish-American War Memorial was recently relocated.A ceremony honoring veterans and dedicating the memorial’s new location in Vets Park will take place in the downtown Sandusky park 2 p.m. Sunday, but the copper box won’t take up permanent residence there until sometime next month.City Manager Frank Link, the man who took custody of the antiquated box for the last decade, plans to place laminated copies of all current newspaper coverage in the box with the relics before it is sealed within a concrete tube at the monument.The original newspaper articles unearthed in 1980 were donated to the Follett House Museum. Copies of the 58-year-old stories will go back into the box with the antique silk flag and a broken pin that may have been a war decoration.Also in the box is a list of 125men from Erie County — the Sixth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B — who served in the Spanish-Americanconflict.According to information that accompanies the names, the entire regiment left Columbus by train on May 17, 1898 for training camp in Tennessee. They reached Cienfuegos, Cuba on Jan. 4, 1899 by way of the U.S.T. Minnewaska.The troops returned to the states April 22, 1899 on the U.S.T.
