Society notes donations to museumFor the Cumberland Ttmes-News' i-h*' 1 '*“* wmiin in im |, ,WESTERNPORT — The Westernport Heritage Society met recently at the Western Maryland Station/Museum in downtown Westernport. Jack Fazenbaker, president, opened the meeting and the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read.The group recently participated in Water Day, a project to encourage restoration of George’s Creek. A cooperative effort by the residents has made a significant improvement of the stream banks. Participants includedthe students of the seventh grade at Westmar Middle School and workers cleaned up from Franklin to the confluence of the Potomac River.Fazenbaker noted that a group from the society would be placing a Revolutionary War marker on the grave of Daniel Reckner, located on the eastern slope of Big Savage Mountain. Recknerenlisted in the Continental Army at Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1778 and served three years in Captain William Oldhams company. He fought at the battles of Brandywine and Monmouth.Reckner died Nov. 8, 1829 and is buried on what was his homestead. Some of his descendants still reside in Garrett County.A marker denoting service in the War of 1812, will be placed on the grave of Charles Broadwater, who is buried up in the Savage River area on the old Broadwater property. This activity will beunder the direction of Harriet Moore of Westernport.Milt Hart and Fazenbaker announced that several notable items have been donated to the Heritage Society for the museum. Donors include:Wayne and Patricia Biggs, an autograph of Lefty Grove; Emmett and June WTiitworth Ryan, numerous photos ofsporting and other activities around the tri-towns and a picture showing the steam auto, which was built by Stephen Pagenhardt, of Westernport; Killian McIntyre, a model of a Conestoga wagon; Mary Biggs, numerous old photos and printed articles; Regina Cirillo, two Old German beer steins; and Chuck Moorehead, a BO Railroad lantern.All items received are recorded in two different journals, showing donor, name of article, date and other information. Where possible, per manent identification tags of pertinent information is attached to the donated item.It was noted that member Steve Biggs has made several fine picture frames for some of the photos, we havereceived.Fazenbaker stated that the crossing signs are being painted and will be installed as soon as thev are finished. The signs will be placed nearthe station and the Caboose Park. He also suggested burying a time capsule in the Caboose Park. The group feltthat this idea should be pursued and a committee will be formed to work on the project.Biggs suggested that a notebook be placed at the Station/Museum to record ideas for items to be collected for the capsule.Information is still needed for the files on the individual churches of the community. A file has been set up for each church.Garv Fazenbaker won the prize drawing.The Heritage Society meets the second Tuesdav of eachPWp.:month at the Station Museum at 7 p.m. The station is open the second and fourth weekends of the month from 1 to 4 p.m. Arrangements can be made for special tours and visits, at other times.
