Dirksen of 16214 Finch Ave., all of Harvey, have been graduated from nine weeks of Navy basic training at the Naval Training center at San Diego.In the first weeks of their naval service they studied military subjects and lived and worked under conditions similar to those they will encounter on their first ship or at first shore station.In making the transition from civilian life to Nival service, they received instruction under veteran Navy petty officers. They studied seamanship, as well as survival techniques, military drill and other subjects.a)INavy Ensign Jay A. Maher,son of Mr. and Mrs. Allison J. Maher of 14636 LaSalle, Dolton, has qualified for carrier landings aboard the USS Lexington.Ensign Maher qualified while undergoing advanced flight training with Training squadron-25 (VT-25), based at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Beeville, Tex.Flying the TF-9J “Cougar” Jet, he will now receive training in all-weather instrument flight, advanced air-to-air and air-to-ground weaponry, tactics and formation as well as carrier operations.Upon completion of the training with VT-25, he will be designated a Naval-marine aviatorand receive his “wings of gold.”* ♦ *Navy Machinist’s Mate Third Nolan Farlow Sr., 16027 Lincoln street, Harvey, is in the Western Pacific aboard the support aircraft carrier Hornet, presently operating as a part of the U. S. Seventh Fleet.Enroute to the Western Pacific, the carrier spent six days in Hawaii, and then visited Yokosuka, Japan.During the past year the Hornet has taken part in Midshipman training cruises, and the recovery of a space capsule.While in the Western Pacific, the Hornet will serve as the flagship for Rear Admiral Harry L. Hardy Jr., commander Anti-Submarine Warfare Groupthree.* * *Armv Private Alvin KelloggPrivate Alvin KelloggJr., 17 whose parents live at 14811 Leavitt, Harvey, has completed nine weeks of advancedinfantry training at Ft. Gordon, Ga. His last week of training was spent in guerrilla warfareexercises.During his guerrilla training, he lived under simulated Viet Nam conditions for five days, fighting off night attacks and conducting raids on “enemy” villages. He was taught methods of removing booby traps, setting ambushes and avoiding enemy ambushes.Other specialized training included small unit tactics, map reading, land mine warfare, communications, and firing the M-14 rifle, M-60 machine gunand 3.5-inch rocket launcher.* • •Airman Thomas Sloane,whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Byron McCoy, 14630 Keller, Midlothian, has been selected for technical training at Lowry AFB, Colo., as a U.S. Air Force Munitions specialist.The airman recently completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex. His new school is part of the Air Training Command which conducts hundreds of specialized courses to provide technically trained personnel for the nation’s aerospace force.Airman Sloane is a 1965 graduate of Bremen Community High school.
