Byard, radioman thirdclass, USNR, son of Mrs. ChristineByard, Des Isle Avenue, has recently been commended by theNavy Department for outstanding ( service during* the invasion ofItaly. The citation is as follows:“The Chief of Naval Personneltakes pleasure in commending you for your outstanding service as a member of the Armed Guard Unitaboard the SS Hilary A. Herbertduring action against the enemyin the invasion of Anzio, Italy beginning 22 January 1944,uA report of the experience reveals that your ship was in theinvasion area for a period of eightdays, during which time you weresubjected to 75 air raid alerts and27 actual bombings. The NavyGun Crew was on emergencywatch throughout this long period,eating and sleeping at battle stations and repeatedly under firefrom shore batteries, machine-gunstrafing, exploding bombs and flying shrapnel. Despite the terrificand prolonged strain of battle theArmed Guard, with unswervingdevotion1 to duty, fought back withan accurate and sustained barrage of shellfire which shot down threeplanes and contributed to the de-struction of two others.
