Western Federation Claims to have Seven Unions Formed Throughout the Mining DistrictWith the Western Federation of Miners affiliating with the American Federation of I^bor. and wltih both these organizations working in harmony in the Joplin district, the efforts to unionize the miners of the zinc and lead region are said to be meeting with unprecedented success and, according to reports, seven unions already have been formed and others are planned. The unionizing of the miners has nothing to do with the recent strikes of workmen in the Webb City catnip.W. D. Mahoney, of Denver, Colo., first vice president of the Western Federation of Miners, has established headquarters at lt;52S Main St., while his fellow worker, J. W. Jlnkerson, of Southeast Missouri, general or-gnnizer for the Western Federation of Miners, has established headquarters in Webb City. Several hundred miners are reported to have Joined the union, organization having been perfected at two mines in Joplin; two In Webb City: one in Carthage; one in Prosperity, and one in Central City. Heretofore when efforts were made to enlist the sympathies of the Joplin miners with tihe Western Federation of Labor the organizers did not have the hearty eo-operaion of the American Federation of Laborfor the reason that the two bodies then were not affiliated.
