An Excellent Collection,The collection of curios displayed m Woodring’s show window was made by Chas. Coppock while stationed near Havana as a member of the fifty-first Iowa. Hlt;? was battalion bugler, and had con-J fciderabls spare time and the collectior; he brought home with him shows that he was not idle all the time he was off duty. The collection has attracted general interest and all times of the day crowds may be seen looking it over. The following is a description of the collection, as written by the young bugler himself:Two crossed swords, leather water bottle, pouch and cartridge boxes were taken from Morro castle. Machete was secured from a Cuban soldier at Santiago. The short knife was bought from a Cuban soldier, and a knife of this sort is something that no Cuban is without. The piece of candle I got from the tomb of Columbus, or where he was supposed to rest. Small pieces of rook are part of Morro castle. The small pieces of iron were knocked from an old cannou at the foot of the oldest tower on the island. The style of tower and gun show them to be not less than 300 years old.Gold chevron was taken from uniform of a Spanish naval captain killed in the battle of Santiago harbor. The red chevron belonged to a Spanish infantry captain. Old knife blade picked up on side of fort near Havana. Large red and yellow handkerchief is the style issued by the Spanish government to soldiers for instructions about the Mauser riflesand different modes of fighting.Buttons on cards are all the different kinds used in the Spanish army and oivil service.Short silver spoon is issued to the Spanish soldiers.Brass knob was taken from governor general’s palace at Havana.Piece of mirror was taken from the former residence of General Weyler at Havana.China rose was taken from graves adjoining the burial place of the “Maine heroes/’Chip of wood is from tree used as a scaffold by the Spaniards for thirty-sev-en Cubans whom they had captured.Green cord is worn on dress caps by the Spanish.Cartridges in clips are Mausers aud those with the brass bullets are the famous poison balls that the Spanish used in the late war.Pioture of bone pile was taken in the Christobal Colon cemetery at Havana. The pile is 80x63x00 and in it are the bones of all the people who have been buried in the cemetery for the past 250 years. It has been covered up lately, by order of Gen, Brooke, to prevent disease,Earthen jar is a minatureof (he kind used by Cubans for cooling drinking water,Slippers are style worn by poorer class of Cubans aud one pair lasts them a year,Hat is made of Panama straw and is valued at $10 or $1*J iu this country.The sorips money is not in use now and can be bought anywhere for five cents on the dollar.The copper eoius are the one and two-ceut pieces, Spanish, aud the silver coins are worth twenty cents.When we first lauded on the islaud an American dollar was worth $140 in Spanish money, but before we left their money was at par with American money.
