Hampshire County will celebrate Confederate MemorialDay beginning with a luminary service June 2 at 8:30 p.m. at the Indian Mound Cemetery.The celebration commemorates the events of 1863-1865. Created in 1754, Hampshire County was part of Virginia. By the end of the Civil War, Hampshire County emerged as part of a new state - West Virginia. As a result of this change, the local men who defended their homes and families were treated as second-class citizens bv the outside world. No pension was given, no reimbursement for property damages or destroyed homes wasw -received.In spite of these discrepancies, the men were regarded as heroes and 1866 marked the lirst celebration of Confederate Memorial Day. A year later, a monument wasinstalled in Indian Mound Cemetery.On June 3, re-enactors and Sons of Confederate Veter ans, Mountaineer Partisan Rangers, Camp 2249 will visit cemeteries in the Slanesville and Jersey Mountain areas, where they will install Iron Crosses of Honor on Confederate graves. At 2 p.m., the 13th Virginia Volunteer Infan try and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp 2249 will march down Main Street from the old courthouse to the Confederate Monument. Flags and flowers will be placed on graves and a large handcrafted garland will be draped around the monument. The honor roll of soldiers will be read followed bv a musketsalute.A ceremony at Mount Pis-gah Cemetery will follow. Rob Wolford will give the unusual history of Alfred Whiting, and a Cross of Honor and a tombstone wll be placed on his grave.An 8 a.m. service June 4 will be delivered by the Rev. Jeff Rossignol on the lawn at Tvg-gart Hall. Worship services will include the 13th Virginia Volunteer Infantry and the Sons of Confederate Veter ans, Camp 2249.Tickets are required for the Ride the Rails to Ridgedale Potomac Eagle excursion June 4 at 12:30 p.m. The Washington House at Ridgedale will be open to visitors.
