Rebuilt B26 Undergoes First Flight TestingHamilton Aircraft Co. has successfully flight tested the first of 18 World War II ^26 bombers it is renovating for the Brazilian Air Force.Following a series of “rev-ups'* and high-speed taxi trials, the aircraft was flown for an hour. “She performed well and we encountered no difficulties,” said company President Gordon Hamilton at the conclusion of the first of a series of flight tests.The tests will continue with officials of the Brazilian Air Force present to observe.The aircraft — originally the A26 Invader, but redesignated after World War II — were taken out of mothballs at Davis-Monthan AFB by Hamilton in 1957 and prepared for flying to Brazil. They were returned to the Hamilton plant at 6501 S. Park Ave. early this year for extensive repairs and modifications.In addition to a major engine overhaul, each aircraft will undergo extensive airframe repairs and be equipped with modern radio equipment. Armament will be increased with a rocket pod under each wing;the number of 50 caliber machine guns in the nose will be increased from four to six.Operational modifications include new rudder controls, increased fuel capacity, automatic flap controls incorporating a pre-selector device and other changes that will give the pilot Single-engine control down to stall speeds.Hamilton said he expects to complete work on the 18 aircraft by. February.
