My encouxagement to him to supply me with this bit of information brought results. Not long ago he came out to my farm and brought three books. The one is “The Kentucky Rifle;7 by DilJin. Another is “Smith and Wesson, Hand Guns,'' by McHenry and Roper. The third is a catalogue. “Antique and Modern Arms/' published by The Kimball Arms Co.On page 16 of the last under : NEW ENGLAND COLONIAL RIFLES appears this: “Contrary to the general impression, rifles wcte made in New England at least 50 years before they were made in Pennsylvania.” Then they list several of these early New England rifles.After reading this I went hack to my story appearing in this column March 7 on “The Lancaster Rifle, Secret Weapon of the Colonial Wars.” Now I confess that the statement that rifles were made lit New England before they were made irt Pennsylvania is news to me. But after reading my story again, I find nothing to retract. I did not make any claim as to whoie the rifle was first produced. I simply presented the so-called Kentucky rifle, which definitely was made in Pennsylvania and which was the real secret weapon of the Colonial wars. In this I am substantiated by the books that Mr. Abbott was kind enough to loan me.For instance, on page 20, of dieabove-mentioned catalogue ap-P6«THE KENTUCKY RIFLE. Product of American genius.It won the Revolutionary uar find secured our frontiers*.Made in small back countrygunshops with primitive loots, it emerged a truly unique American weapon.”On page 17 of Dillin's “TheKentucky Rifle,” we find:“The most cartful research as established beyond doubt that Pennsylvania was not only the birth place or the American rifle, but that many years thereafter It had a practical monopoly of the rifle Indus-try”By the way. Mr. Abbott has quite a collection of guns that I will want to see at my first opportunity. Besides he is as conversant with local history as any one I have met in this county. How lucky I was, after all, on my rifle story considei-ing there is this rifle enthusiast who knows so much more about the subject than I do.
