He wrote: ;“This day is really one of the Red Letter days in my book”. Lt. Rpntschler writes that, he flew on the “mercy missions” over Holland which the 8th Air Force undertook the first few days of May. On each, of the first' three days of May, approximately 400 B-17 planes dropped 300 tons of food to the starving Hollanders. Lt. Rentschler was on four of these missions. He wrote: “It really made us feel good to see the people waving flags and everything they pould get theirVon when we- flew over,.We flew over Holland at from 100 to 400 feet' altitude andgot to ,see what war really doesto a country. The. English don’trealize what it is to be in a war to the extent these poor people saw it.
