King of Riverside, Calif., in which she tells interestingly of the days of long ago when she was in charge of the primary room at the old South Side school building in this city, recently destroyed by fire. Mrs. King, whose maiden name was Mattie Stone, was the first primary teacher in the building that had been constructed away back in 1871, nearly sixty years ago. The text of her letter follows:“In August, 1871, I met the board of directors of the Wyoming school at the Holsizer hotel (now called the Commercial) in. Wyoming. The directors were Dr. J. C. Copestake, Samuel K. Conover and Perry Stancliff. I was engaged to teach the prjmary grades, to begin November 1, 1871. The time was later changed to December 1. Miss Maggie Teeter (now Mrs. A. G. Hammond) of Bradford accompanied me, as I was then teaching at Pleasant Green, near Bradford. We visited thesite of the school building which was in course of erection.“In September I went to Hillsdale, Michigan. I left there for Wyoming ten days after the great Chicago fire, which was still burning uuu smoldering, leaving an impression on my mind never to be forgotten.
