He had served on a minesweeper that had been sunk by enemy action in the Invasion of Bataan peninsula on Feb. 14. The ship was sunk by Japanese shore batteries on Bataan and had been hit at least eight timei before she was finally finished off by a U. S. destroyer.Phelan, one of the two crew members not wounded in the action, was in the water for three hours, his mother stated.
