Airline» • % #«P» U v « At Auup i iuyeCargo JetsOakland-based World Airways Inc. today announced the purchase of two mammoth Boeing 707 cargo-passenger jet aircraft which will operate out of the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport.The large overseas and domestic supplemental air carrier now owns a fleet of 13 piston-powered planes,Edward J. Daly, president of the airline, announced that his firm plans a total investment of $25 million in jetcraft. Their arrival will spur expansion of the World Airlines working force from 300 to 800, Daly said. About 250 of the present employes are based in Oakland.The bulk of the firm's income is derived from military contracts, and many of its flights originate from Travis Air Force Base and other such installations.“The Air Force now is giving increased contract awards which enable non-subsidized carriers to finance the purchase of modern, long-range jet transports,” Daly told a press conference at the Edge-water Inn.He said the Boeing 707-320C planes which World Airways is buying can carry a maximum of 188 passengers anda full cargo payload of 90,000 pounds.In Military Air TransportSendee runs, the craft will carry 168 passengers or a combination of cargo and passengers.CONTRACT SERVICEWorld Airways now flies1 regular contract service to Alaska, Kwajalein, Bangkok, Tokyo, Guam, Wake Island, Manila, Okinawa and numerous other Pacific points.In addition, the company transports military personnel to the East Coast and has applied for Civil Aeronautics Board permission to provide trans-Atlantic service.The World Airways announcement is in response to a Department of Defense pol-} icy decision to grant new con-I tracts to carriers providing 1 jet facilities.Daly said that World Air-wjavj is thofirm Jo buy the convertible j cargo-passenger type of 707 transport.
