GIANT PLANES STAGE BOMBING RUNS ON CITIESBad Weather ForcesSplitup Into Squadron!for Huge DemonstrationAboard Superfortress, (U.fi)—Almost 100 superbombers theoretically fired and blasted the eastern seaboard’s largest cities Friday in the mightiest peacetime maneuvers ever staged by the army air forces. From the strategic air command’s viewpoint, the mock raid on the cities was a success. Bad weather spoiled the demonstration. Overcast skies forced the silver superfortresses io break up their massing bombing run into “boxes.”Strategic air command headquarters announced that it considered New York “a shambles” after the raid. The SAC also reported one Incident which almost caused disaster. That occurred, the SAC said, when a light plane flew through a formation of the bombers as they were heading for Danbury* Conn.r after the run over New York. But that was the only incidentwhich marred the mock raid. The haze was bad as the planes roared next over Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. In Philadelphia, one citizen remarked disgustedly, “Our pigeons could put on a better show than that.”The planes, about 125 strong, took off from 6 bases in the west, southwest and southeast early Friday. But upwards of 30 did not make the final bombing run over the 4 big cities of the east coast. . Roaring-in at 3,500 feet at more than 200 miles an hour, the airmen found New York’s shimmering skyscrapers to be perfect markers.
