James G. DcWolf, Kearney, Neb. When he first sighted the Japanese convoy, at least 40 zeros were serving as a protective escort. Because of low clouds, he sometimeshad to fly at an altitude of only 200!. feet. A group of seven zeros at-. . tacked him several times.Nevertheless, DeWolf and his crew remained on patrol above the convoy and reported back, during the long perilous hours, that other planes had bombed and sunk four enemy vessels and damaged two others.Among those decorated with De--Wolf was Sgt. Gilbert A. Flicger, 'Moscow, Ida.Japanese ConfusedTlylng through the searchlights at Rabaul, the other bomber also , -dropped flares to Illuminate further• the target which already was lighted '■‘from fires started by Incendiary ‘ bombs. So confused were the Japanese that a whole formation of. bombers completed Its runs before being detected.Among those awarded the dls-'■ tlngulshed service cross was Second Lieut. Richard U. Aguirre, Mountain Home, Ida.Lieutenant Aguirre recently received the air medal for his part In sinking a Japanese warship off New Britain Jan. 25. Several of the others also have been decorated previously.
