Posthumous Award For John HoppleHopkins JournalThe Distinguished Service Cross was awarded John Hopple who gave his life for his country in defenseof (he Philippines.The following account of the award as announced by the War Department is taken from the Taylor County Herald of Bedford.Sergt. John O. Hopple, son of Mr. and Mrs Dwight Hopple, was among the 101 American and Filipino sold-lers to be honored by their govern -ment for heroism in the defense of the Philippines.Each was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.Hopple, injured early in the war, died of wou.uis he received in actionin the Philippines on February 7,Enlisted in the national guard in Des Moines on November 25, 1940, Hopple was sent to the Islands last October, according to the War Depict ment records. He entered active army duty in Chicago before hostilities began.The only son of the Bedfordcouple. Hopple was a graduate of Iowa State College. Ames.Awards announced by the War Department covered the period fromthe Japanese Invasion of Pearl Harbor. December 7. and included sorne of the decorations awarded in earlierannouncements.
