M-60 tank kills soldier in Carson training areaOne Fort Carson soldier was killed and another injured Monday when they were struck by an M-60 tank while they were manning an outpost in a downrange training area.Spec. 4 Jerome J. Henry, 22, of St. Paul, Minn., was crushed to death in the 1:25 a.m. accident, said Elaine Strong, a post public affairs officer.Pfc. Michael Leighton, 23, of Las Vegas, Nev., was listed in good and stable condition at the post hospital. He suffered cuts and bruises but no broken bones, Mrs. Strong said.Both soldiers were assigned to the 4th Battalion. 61st Air Defense Artillery, and were in an outpost across from their mainunit, she said. She said investigators are not sure whether s the two soldiers were sleeping when the accident happened.The accident occurred after a tank unit moved into the trees to “take cover/' she said. The unit was traveling in a convoy when v one of the vehicles broke down | and the remainder went into I1 “tactical mode, Mrs. Strong said.She said that is the same action used if the unit was hi a combat situation.The accident is under investigation by a Fort Rucker, Ala., safety team. The team was already at Fort Carson to investigate a fatal accident that occurred Friday.
