i.tSupreme court commissioner’s office.—Judge Greenwood is doing quite a large business in the way of habeas corpus. Numerous applications havebeeu mado for the discharge of recruits in the U. S. dra-u £°°R service for the war in Mexico. William Martin Hamilton was brought up this morning for examination, who applied for his discharge on the ground of having been intoxicated during his contract with Undo Sam. The testimony of the orderly sergeant was taken who deposed that Hamilton was sober at the t'nne of enlistment. This case is now pending. Application has likewise been made for the discharge of William Carpenter, on the ground of his being of unsound mind. Similar application 1ms been made 011 behalf of Patrick Haskins, who has probably deserted, as ho was not forth-j coming at the time when tho hearing of the matter was appointed. Also on behalf of a youth of 17 naniod George Howard, who enlisted without Idsfathers knowledge or consent............................Tho above cases are yet pending. The following recruits have been discharged by tho commissioner within a few days: Peter Lane, at the application of his wife, who was almost broken hoarted at Ins desertion of her, and enlistment while in a state of intoxication.
