O'Bannon, tile writer, and sought his., services as an attorney to secure hint a pension. IJe had no papers and beginning from his verbal story to us about his military service we began an investigation which included correspondence with the Adjutant General of the United States Army, the Commissioner of Pensions, at Washington, D. C., and tjje Postmaster, at Platville, Wisconsin near where Mr. Foland spent most of his life, and we have found Mr. Foland's story to be entirely true, and in September last we filed an application for him. a pension. We have two 'Discharge Certificate*’’ from the War ' Department, which we secured last July showing William W. Poland's military service a* follows:Prom August fi, 186J. to March 30, 1862, In to. C, 7th Regiment Wis. Vol. Inf., and from September 16, 1863 to September 2C, 18l65, in Co. E, 30th Regffnent Wis. The first time he was discharged by reason of disability, and at the time of his last Sdisehai^e it , was “by reason of muster out of company..A good record. Two enlistments. Service of two years and seven months and two honorable discharges, and yet no pension. ' SNow For the Money,We have secured all the proof needed tty-secure this gray old veteran ji^|iSibn except tlj.e proof that he is .WHtiiilm Wallace Foland, the man he to be, and we have done some-kind enough to make a picture Ot Ttr'. Poland which-.^e sent to Mr. T. Cleary, the Postmaster at PlattvlHfe, Wisconsin, and he informs us that quite a number of the older citizens of that place and the country around recognized the picture as that of William W. Foland, and the only Way we see to complete Mr. Poland’s pension claim and secure his pension for him A, la to send him to Plattville, Wisconsin, *• that his oid acquaintances may see h(m, and they can then make affidavit as to his identity, proving that he is the man who served as a soldier*■ in the name of William W. Foland, lf according to the War Deparment [records. The railway fare from hereto PlattVille, Wisconsin is $15.86, but opr old friend wil\ need a few dollars to provide meals hnd other comforts on the way and it would be Well if he could have a few dollars in his poeketi when he gets there, hence we Would like to get $30.03, or more for him. , *' fAnd so we are asking for volunteer contributions of any sums from 5 cents to $1.00, all of which will be given to Mrr Foland for the purpose mentioned. We will prepare the affidavits to be signed by his friends, which he -will take with him, and with this help we feel sure we can secure a pension for Mr. Foland. Please hand mail us your offering but be sure to mention that the money is for Mr. Poland.
