Byrem and CorporalBarger Get CommendationsTwo county boys who happened lo he assigned together to a small ordnance company on the Allied Fifth Army's Anzio beachhead, have just received simultaneous commendations from their commanding general for outstanding performance of their importaut job.They ore Sgf. Waiter J. Byrem, of Funkstown, and Cpl. Benjamin T. Barger, of Hagerstown, and their job is seeing that every anti-aircraft weapon on that strategic beachhead is kept in grade A firing condition.This means a day-to-day check on all weapons, the removal of all guns which have to he taken to the ordnance shop for general overhauling, and their replacement With new ones. Under the battle conditions of the beachhead, this job is fraught with as much danger as the actual manning of the guns.Both veterans of this highly-skill- j ed company, Byrem and Barger arrived on the beachhead in February, after intensive training during their early Army careers in the care and maintenance of anti-aircraft material.“Ack-aok does a lot of firing on j this beachhead, remarker Corporal Barger, and in many cases the men who do the firing say their lives depend on the accuracy of their weapons. We know that to he a fact, and we make every effort to see that the accuracy5 is maintained,”Sgt.
