PollutionIs Topic * T SpeechWednesday, May 3•“Pollution in Narraganselt Bay” was the topic of a talk given Monday at the Quononoquott Garden Club in Jamestown, by Capt, Edward McManus, commanding officer of Navy public works in Newport.Capl. McManus described the problems of the Navy in considering the part the Navy plays in poilu lion of the bay, and what the Navy plans to do about solving this problem,The fire fighting school is recommended to cut down on (he smoke. He told of the method used in controlling oil slicks and said ships are not allowed to dump seivage in the harbor, but must travel many miles out to sea to empty tanks. Litter cans are provided on the piers.The captain said with appropriations made by Congress 1oeliminate pollution cf air and the water, experimenting Is now going of disposing of trash on aboard ships. However, this type of disposal is difficult aboard smaller ships,Mrs. Albert E. Hull, program chairman, introduced the speaker at the home of Mrs, Robert Bowes of Marcello Drive. Mrs. William F. Kitts, president,, conducted the business meeting. Mrs. Neale D, Murphy and Mrs. Ernest Rarber poured at the tea hour.
