A lot of our Terre Haute lads are going over Luzon with a fine-toothed comb but not many have turned up in Silay, Negro's. So far the only one we know about is T/Sgt. Jim Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. »David Smith, 1225 North Fourth. Jim is serving with the 160th infantry regiment, 40th Infantry Division, and he’s seeing a lot of mountainous country. We’ve just heard about one rugged expedition he and several others made behind enemy lines—to establish an observation post. Jim was chosen because he’s a qualified Alamo Scout as well as an experienced hiker, but he says this hike topped any and all he’d ever made in all his bom days! On a map it would look like a measly little old ten miles but actually it was better than 25—some of ’em right straight up! They followed a secret guerrilla trail which wound around and up the steep side of a mountain. In three places this overgrown trail passed mammoth ravines that dropped nearly 300 feet straight down. They found themselves some gorgeous scenery, such as waterfalls of 250 feet or better, but Jim writes that he’ll take the view from the Wabash river bridge, thank you.
