Burk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Burk of Convoy,wearer of the Purple Heart and also the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in Italy, received a citation with the latter medal, signed by Major Oen. W. O. Livesay.Pvt. Burk, serving with an engineer's corp, has a brother, Pfc. James Burk, who has been stationed in the Pacific Theatre of Operations lor two years.The citation which accompanied the Bronze Star follows:‘ For heroic achievement in actionon October 7, 1944, near Sabbtnoni,Italy. Pvt. Burk and a group of men were given the mission of filling a shell crater in the road northeast of Sabbinoni so that tanks could proceed to the front to support the ii *“The group was subjected to enemy artillery lire as it drove forward but continued on to tlie north side of town where they parked their vehicles. After removing some unexploded enemy demolitions, the men began the task of clearing the road. The enemy immediately started an artillery barrage in the area, forcing Pvt, Burk and the other men to take cover. j“As soon as the shelling stopped the men immediately began work again and completed their job. As i the group returned to their vehicles the enemy placed mortar and machine gun fire in the area forcing most of the men to cover, but Pvt. | Burk and a few men got into their vehicles and drove through the enemy fire, placing counter fire on the German positions with submachine guns.“Through Pvt. Burk's determined efforts the mission was successfully completed. His courage and aggressiveness typifies tlie highest t* iditjons of the American soldier.
