In a letter received by his sister. .Mrs. W. K llalpin. this morning, lie tells of being struek in tin hand bv a piece ol hell and being forced to leave the trenches for a couple of dayslie says. in part: ,We are just out from live days in the trenches and believe me it was some hot place at all times. There | wits no rifle fire at all but th* shelled tin* devil out of us all the time -you never knew when one would pay you a visit One hit the outside of my (iugout and We were busy the next I ten minutes digging ourselves out;|j nobody hurt. I got a ^pull piece of : ^ shell on the hand the next morning. [’ not much, but it started to poison soI\II bad to come out and go to tin* dress- mg station. Was out for two days then joined the company again. Oh yes. be- j fore 1 forget, I am now a lance cor- ^ poral instead of just a plain private • (lot my first stripe about ten daysago. Don’t know bow long I will keepit for you can lose them pretty easy;*' at times; oh well, we should worry. The weather is fine and wflrni nowwith very little rain. I got the papers yon sent the first day we were in , the trenches and you don’t know how they helped pass the time You see, d we can't move around any during the * day time so that any reading matter is more than welcome. How are all ., the folks these days? Hope they are ^ all well. Hive my regards to all the boys. Dob Hoy sends his beat regards to you all. Don't know how long i vv •• will be out ol lite first line of trendies this trip, but don’t auppoae , we will be in for ten or twelve days., They are shelling the town today with j those big Jack Johnson sheila, and | lord what a wreck they make of a place. We are on the outside of the town in billets so don’t suppose we are in any danger. 1 saw one go1through three brick houses at one time. You could sec them hit and thenthey seemed to shiver and shake for about ten seconds, then they would all fall in a bunch. All you could see was a pile of bricks. Well, sister mine. 1 must ring off now and eat forif is supper time, l/ne to the folks.
