His knowledge is first-hand for he is Medina county’s last surviving veteran of that great war between the states. He wouldn’t have been a veteran if he hadn’t lied about his age, but to war he would go. Consequently,he told the recruiting officer that he was 18 years of age instead of his correct age, 16.Canfield enlisted at Wooster in Company C of the 176th regiment of the Ohio infantry, on Sept. 3, 1864. After spending several weeks in camp in Columbus, he was sent with his company to Nashville, Tenn., for patrol duty.As he hearkens back to those days now, Canfield recalls that the job of patrolling the streets of that captured Rebel city wasn’t exactly a healthy one. From two to five men patrolled each street together, constantly on the lookout for begrudging residents who didn’t particularly care to be under the rule of Yankee troops. As far as actual service in battle was concerned, Canfield’s most vivid experience came when the southern army closed in on Nashville and he and his company were detailed to drive off a southern cavalry unit which was attempting to take one of the city’s batteries. However, before the company came into actual contact with the cavalry, it had retreated. The veteran returned to Litchfield immediately after the war and farmed there until his retirement 24ic-.v :JAMES WALTER CANFIELDIf he Is at all well* he attend the Memorial day exercises in Medina this month, aspresident of the day.years agoexpects
