Major Ivan J. Roggen, son of Rev. and Mrs. John Roggen of Maurice, was awarded the Legion of Merit by General James W. Gavin for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance cf outstanding services in Sicily and Italy. As regimental surgeon of the 501th parachute infantry. Major Roggen demonstrated exceptional intelligence, marked aggressiveness, and outstanding ereativeness in the performance of his duties. During the periodwhen the dropping oi supplies still presented a ’ry“g problem, he displayed outstanding initiative in the planning, packing, and testing of medical drop bundles, thereby devismS methods which insured adequate medical care for his organizationthroughout the fighting m in Sicily and Italy. His ingenious and untiring efforts resulted in a highlv accurate system of simplified ' medical records which proved to be of great value.
