Kirby Smith with hia 15,000 rebel veterans, advanced into the heart of Kentucky and threatened Cincinnati with destruction. Gov. Dennison issued a call for troops to defend the city. Many gray haired old men and young boys all over the state responded to the call.The state was without arms and every one who went forth on their patriotic mission, took their own trusty rifle, leather pouches full of bullets and ox horns full of powder. A pontoon bridge was built over the river and in three days after the men assembled at Cincinnati ten miles of intrenchments had been built and manned from end to end. Smith remained only a few days near Cincinnati when he retreated, leaving the Squirrel Hunters free to return to their homes. Their experience at the front was a novel one.Dividing ths Labor.So.
