?Ui*ir-Froiu the Sth Iowa Cavalry,Clf.vf.L4ND, Tenn., April 21, 1861.Dfak Hawkeyk:—Itliaa beeu sometime since I have seen anything in your columns relative to the 8th, and 1 thought it might not be amiss to inform its friends of ils whereabouts. We left Waverly on the 12th of March, under orders for Nashville. We arrived there on the 17th, where we remain^! two weeks, all of which time was spent in preparing the regiment for the ffeld by tilling up the vacancies of horses and wagons which had oeen worn out. On the 1st of April we started on the march for Chattanooga, and arrivtMl there on the loth, where we lay one day and were ordered to this place. We bad quite a gay time on the road from Nashville. The roads were very bad, and would have heen considered impassable for anything but a Government train, which must go through, l hough at the sacrifice of the lives of many animals, with which the road was lined. 1 don't think I would be exaggerating to say I saw the bodies of tw'o thousand dead horses and Inules on the road.We arrived at this place on the 13th inst. and were assigned to the 1st Brigade of the ]*t Division of Cavalry, commanded by Col. McCook. Col. Dorr commands our brigade. Here I w ish to say a few words in regard to a few things which I saw in a communication that I read in the Haukeye this morning relative to the citizens, and the proceedings of our Colonel in Humphrey county. It is true there are many Se-ceidi in that county, and it would not be wondered at if to^ne of them would get protection, but I think our friend has been misinformed, or be had not l**en posted in regard to the citizens. I have heard many of them express themselves heartily tired ne war, and wish the old Dm restored, though at the same time there were many who would shoot us from behind a tree, if they could. I mention this, because I think our frieud spoke rather lightly of our Co , in which we do not agree with him, and as I am pretty w ell acquainted jin that section, 1 speak from what 1 know. This lias l»een a very nice place before the w ar, but like all other Southern towns, about played out. The health of the regiment is generally good, though wm have left several in the hospitals. We are otanjasj jiua out of town near a large spring, farm beautiful pine jjrove. I hope you may soon bear something of interest from us.Respectfully yours,Jos. B. Doinm, Co. D.srTenlbGooliouRlt;TheTK«DebRlt;A wRTheRTheRThecRWbRTryR8tocterMjAMwhtit!CU8 A i MbysHuDrIt
