Slmtcn; On yesterday, the enemy, baaing cut our wires, and attacked daring the^night one of oar brigades, 1 deemed it my duty to head ia person the expedition against Bridgeport. I started by train of tarS in the morning, followed by tiro additional companies of cavalry. P found that our pickets had engaged the enemy's pickets, lour miles front Bridgeport, and af.tr a i sharp engagement, in which we loat one man killed, drove them across a stream, the railroad bridge of which I had previously j burned. ’ ; •*With four regiments of infantry, taro j pieces of artillery, dragged by hand, and two companies of cavalry at Bridgeport, we advanced to the burnt bridge, and opened lt;our fire upon the enemy’s pickets on the i other side, thus producing the iraprowion that our advance would be by the railroad. This accomplished, the entire force was thrown across the country about a mile, aniI rut on the rood leading from Stevenson and j Bridgeport.The middle column now advanced at a rapid pace. Our scouts attacked those of the i enemy and forced them from the Bridgeport road. We thus succeeded io making a com-I plete surprise. ti Immediately forming our line of battle on j the cr»3t of a wooded bill, within five hua-i dred yards of the works constructed to defend the bridge, at our firs; fire the rebels broke and run.They attemp‘ed to blow up the main | bridge, but failed, then attempted to fire the | fur;her utremity, but the volunteersnt mycall puthed forward in the fire and saved the bridge. From the island to the main shore we could not save it. It is of small moment.
