Fred Renn, who is with the Marines on Iwo Jima and was in the second wave to make the initial landing on that island. Fred was inducted into the Marines in January, 1943, and went overseas the following September. After five months in the Pacific area, two of which were spent in Guadalcanal, he was returned to the United States and enjoyed a visit at home before returning to California for special instruction. In September, 1944, he was again sent across the Pacific. He says he was “plenty scared” when he went ashore on Iwo Jima and is not too happy about the whole thing yet. Says they live in two-man foxholes and take their bath in the Pacific.
