PiUlSSaved From Prison Camp By U. S. Soldiers(Continued from Pafee 1.)ing. Bullets were whizzing all around us. Words can't describe all this.“Guerillas (Filipinos), led by escaped American boys from our own camp, came rushing down the hillsides after the Jap guards. Then we heard a deep rumble which was getting louder all the time. Pretty soon a large number of amphibian tanks came lumbering along over the ditches and thru the woods and pulled up within a few feet of us. We all crowded around almost speecRless with surprise.“One big husky soldier asked me If there was anyone there from Chicago. I brought Ada over and he gave us some of his rations including cigarets Which we hadn’t had for months.“Then the order was given to take along only what we could carry and get into the tanks. Twenty persons to each one. As soon as we were loaded (2150) we went thru the woods and down into the water and across the lake.“The Japs opened fire on us and the tank crew replied. I have some of the empty shells from this battle. The trip lasted an hour and a half. Then the tanks came up on the beach and unloaded us behind our own lines. Then we were loaded into trucks and here we are.“We have been told not to disclose the name of this place, but it is safe. The guns still rumble all night and day but this does not bother us. We have a oamp movie every night and this with the rumble of guns and young soldiers all over the place makes quite a romantic setting.“I am sending Ada home on the first transportation, but I will stay on here awhile for business reasons.“The reason our boys made such a daring rescue was that we were slated for massacre on that very day. Some of our people had already been executed in cold blood so even that does not surprise us. I weighed ^198 pounds when interned and on February 23 my weight was 124 pounds. Ada lost over 40 pounds. The Japs could not break our spirit, much as they tried.“I wish I could remember the name of the war correspondent from the ‘Chicago Times' as he came into my present quarters and introduced himself and had a chat with me, then went across the street to see Ada. My hat is off to the war correspondents as they take it on the chin just the same as the soldiers.“(March 4) Just received a letter from Lee telling about all of you. Ask him to type out this letter and pass it around to all the family. Will write you a real letter when I*can get to a desk instead of sitting on a cot with a rough board across'my knees. John McCord and Bob Smiley are at Santo Tomas and‘both are well.’*_____nr___r - **.inin14tii31PCofpithCiscen5ofty;ScillAtSc111
