Wakefield native does his part on the homefrontBy ANDY HILLGlobe Associate EditorGRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE,N.I). — When Wakefield native Scott Sturkol learned about the flood of ‘2002, the thing that tore him up the most was his inability to be here or do anything about it.With the outbreak of war in Iraq, Sturkol again finds himself far removed from the action. This time, though, he believes he can do something. The chief of media relations at the 319th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs at Grand Forks Air Force Base is attempting to connect local soldiers, sailors and airmen with the people back home by circulating an Internet questionnaire among the forces in and around Iraq.“I'm sending them questions, said Sturkol.“What I'm trying to do isgive people an overall sense of the number of people from northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula whoare actually in the military. There are a lot of them.”The questions are simple ones, and somewhat limited due to security concerns. At the same time, they’re questions anyone might ask a member of the military who is in harms wav.-17~ w“Questions include name, rank.dep 1 oy ed job, dep 1 oyed unit name and region, said Sturkol, who indicates messages can't include the names of military bases. “What is your hometown? WhatVis the message you'd liketo give the people in vour hometown?■pF ~“How long have you been in the military and what are some of the places you've been0'* Others, more personal, include “What do you miss about your hometown, the people there, and lifestyle? “What has deployment life been like for you? and ‘Anything else you can add.“I've gotten a lot of responses. It ranges from Air Force guvs to Marines, and I'll probably get some Navy, said Sturkol. “Some public affairs people, including my boss, are deployed in that area. It's kind of a chance to reach out and find the folks who don't usually get a lot of recognition.Sturkol, who enlisted in 1992, used his local connections in the Middle East to get the ball rolling.“I made a little brief, he said. “I sent it to my deployed captain over in the Gulf region. She went ahead and contacted all of the public affairs people that are there with the Air Expeditionary Wing. It includes all the sendees.(See STURKOL— Page 2)
