A. E. F.. France, j March 1, 1918. jDAILY MESSENGEMy Dear Mother: Will ondtmvor to jscribble you a few lines in answer to ; your welcome letters of Jan. 4th, and j 9th. Was more than pleased to hear from home once more.Many thanks for the handkerchief.It same in handy. I also got three more packages One from Chaa. Brad-field. He sent me candy and handkerchiefs. One from Virginia Archer at Parkersburg. It contained cigarettes,, chewing gum, a knitted sleeveless sweater, a book “The Dark tar” abo* of stationery and a pair of wrist lets. And I got one from Myrtle Mitchell. She sent me a pipe, knitted, hood, two cans pipe tobacco, and soma chewing gum.I tell you, mother, I certainly nm being treated nice. I also got a nice 1card from Tom Cotton. Also one from a commissioner in Cleveland. !Well we had a little snow last evening. But 1t is quite warm. Have been having rainy weather. We heard they were having some severe cold weather in the V, S.No, mother, T never get the paper. Maybe I'll get them all in a bunch some clay. 1 wasn’t aware that any of the clothes I left nt home are still serviceable.f received « letter from Ida Bennett. She said she was going to send some knitted affairs. That is if we were allowed to get them.No that wasn’t the Captain Parker I know. He is Lieutenant Colonel now'. No I did not think to ask .lame** Salters if he saw or knew of Herbie Kelly. I'll ask him in my next letter.I get a letter every week from him and Wheeler Dew. There is a boy here in the Supply Company from Murray City and a boy in Battalion Afrom Well at on. We trade papers andread one another’s letters. So you see we learn a little of the world’s news.So Arthur was drafted. Best thing for him. But I guess the family will miss him. Glad to hear that Mattie is getting better. What was Hay Windsor in? The army or navy or marines?Am sending you another souvenir.I thought of you when 1 saw It. These handkerchiefs only cost five francs. That is a dollar in U. S. But they certainly are a useful souvenir.Well must close. Write often andsoon. Give everyone my best.As ever, your son.JOE.
