That portion of the Stale, therefore, lying South of the Kentucky river, is at preeent open to the rebels, bat they had not, np to yesterday morning, taken possession of Rlohmond. Yesterday forenoon, firing was heardat Lexington, in the direction ofHiokman’s 'Ferry, and it was supposed the rebels were trying toeross the Kentucky river ait that plaoe. It Is not believed, however, that they will try very hard to get across, and if they skonld, it is believed they will aol be able to ene-aeed. If the river should be crossed it -will be with a view to taking Lexington. This eannot be accomplished without hard fighting.,In regard to Eastern Kentnoky, the -facts are that Otuxs captured Mount Sterling on Sunday morning. He had eight hundred men. The garrison numbered two hundred and fifty. The latter oooupied the Coart Honse and foaght for several hoars. Cldxx, in the meantime, burned several houses, and threatened to destroy the town'nnlees our fores surrendered. This dsmsnd was finally complied with. The Union officer in command at ML Weeding sent to Winchester, * fifteen miles distant, for re-enforcements, and had these been famished promptly, as they might have bean, so we ose informed, the rebels oould not have escaped.
