Templin becomes only 2nd Navy golf coachFor the first time since golf became Dart of the Naval Academy's intercollegiate athletic program in 193-1, the Midshipmen have a new coach.He is 31-year-old Bill Templin of Massillon, Ohio, who played on Purdue University's 1961 N.C.A.A. Championship team. Templin was appointed to the Naval Academy staff in September of 1965 as assistant golf coach and professional. He pitted the Navy Plebes to a 3-3 record last spring.Templin succeeds Bob Williams, who retired in December after directing Navy for 36 seasons. Williams led the Midshipmen to 212 victories in a productive coaching career spanning almost four decades.The new Navy coach got his start in competitive golf at Washington High School m Massillon, He was a three-year letter man for the links team, paying positions from number one to number four. He captained the Washington High golfers as a senior.After graduation, Sitt went to Purdue University, winning three varsity tetters in golf and playing on the Boilermakers’ only N.C.A.A, championship team in any sport. Templin shuffledbetween the three and five positions for Coach Sam Voinoff's 1961 outfit.In 1964. after earning his Bachelor's in Physical Education from Purdue, Templin became head basketball and track coach at Concord Junior High, on the outskirts of Elkhart, Ind. He led the cagers to eight wins in ten pmes his only season at thehelm.To build his first team, Templin has five returning lettermen, including the top four players on last year’s M outfit, The new coach believes that two of his veterans — Captain Marty Alford and Bill Bailey — have an excellent opportunity for high finishes in the Eastern Inter collegia tea come May.Alford got away to a disastrous M start in 1970 but from April 25th on he was the hottest golfer on the Navy squad, winning seven straight to close out the campaign. Bailey, a junior from Oak Park, 111., had an in-and-out record (M) as the Midshipmen’s number one man last spring. He was at his best early in the year when he won four of his first sis.The golf team will open on April 3rd, entertaining Villa nova on the Naval Academy course.
