World War IIScout to LeaveCarson MondayOne of the original Alamo Scouts of World War II famewill leave Ft Carson Monday for Korea Sgt. Vergil F Chief'' Howell, a Pawnee Indian. is an accounting specialist in the Gamsnn Finance and Accounting Office.He is one of the few menin the U S. Army entitled to wear on his left brest pocket the badge of the Alamo Scouts, a voluntary reconnaissancegroup of the Sixth Army which went behind Japanese lines in advance of task forces.Three-hundred men were Interviewed for the elite unit. Forty were chosen for training Twenty became members of the team, savs 'Chief' Howell.Their mission was to check on the enemy, determine his location, his strength, his supplies. then suggest the best time and place to attack Howell left the scouts near the Philippines to rejoin the 158th Regimental Combat Team, the Bushmasters. a jungle infantry group. This service earned him another distinctive patch — a Bushmaster snake coiled around a machete against a blue background.His 42 months of active combat during World War II took him to many areas in the Pacific and earned him battle ribbons including the Bismarc-Arrhipeiago with three battle stars and the Philippine Liberation with one star Howell was born on the Pawnee Reservation at Pawnee, Okla . and was given the name of his grandfather, TVDa-De-Kuk-Sa, a Pawnee chief. He followed the rodeo circuits until he entered the Army hi 1940.He has served in three sep-arate periods for a total of 15 years.
