C. Kiehne, Sikeston residents for the past two years, received word this morning that their son, 1st Lieut. Herman Howard Kiehne, was killed in action in Germany on February 28. The War Department message came to the young officer’s wife, Mrs. Dorothy Kiehne, at her home in St. Louis. Lieut. Kiehne was attached to the 86th Mechanized Cavalry of the 6th Armored Division, Patton’s Third Army.Born in Cherokee, la., on March 11, 1917, Lieut. Kiehne came with his family to Cape Girardeau at the age of two years, 'spending all his boyhood there. After schooling at the Lutheran grade school and Sikeston high school, he was a student at State College for two jears before entering the employment of the Southeast Missourian, Cape Girardeau newspaper.In 1939, the young man enlisted in the 106th Calvary, and subsequently received training in Camp Livingston, La., Fort Knox, Ky., where he was commissioned; Camp Cook, Calif., and Fort Riley, Kan. He went overseas late in January, 1944, and crossed from England to France in July, just a month after D-day. In January, 1943, Lieut. Kiehne was married to Miss Dorothy Goehring of St. Louis.
