Richard M. Bales is home from Camp Carson Colorado, where he is receiving treatment for a case of trench foot incurred while fighting from foxholes with the 7th aTmy in Alsace. His division landed at Cherbourg, France, September 10 and made the trip across France in the ‘40 men and 8 horses” box-cars which World War I veterans remember.His infantry unit was on the front line for three months, and he ports the cold and dampness of the foxholes was worse than the German-:. He wears the combat in-! fantryman’s hadee.S2-c Lewis D. Bales arrived Sunday foT a 15-day leave. He has been aboard an escort carrier as cook, with a battle station as pointer for a 40mm. anticraft gun. His carrier has been in frequent action and he wears six battle stars. Included in the battles inwhich his “baby flat-top” took partwere Guam, Saipan Tinian, Palau islands. Leyte gulf and the landing on Luzon in Lingayen gulf.His carrier was one of the group attacked by Jap battleships off Leyte, and was being fired on by 14dnch and 16-inch guns which farcut-ranged the smaller guns of the carrier. One near-mis? damaged the carrier's propeller, but when a smaller Jap ship closed within range of the carrier’s guns, the carrier scored direct hits to sink the enemy vessel and add that mark to the shio’s “sccre-card”which shows 27 Jap planes shotdown.The BaJes have another son inservice Sl-c Eugene Roles, who isin the armed guard, and a son-in-law, James Fitzgerald, U.S.N., at Alamanda, California.Note: Mrs. Bales is a daughter of the late Joe Nkkell, and a sister of Fern N. Woodward.
