War is coming to Warren in April.What is believed to be the largest military operation ever conducted in a civilian area will be staged in the Allegheny National Forest throughout April and until May 3. Over 1,-000 members of an Army Airborne unit, National Guardsmen and Green Berets will engage in war games.Included in the miniature war will be 600 members of the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, 175 Green Berets from Fort Devon, Mass., 85 National Guardsmen from Company “A,” 112th Infantry, Bradford, and 140 men from various guardWar Game Planned In Foresttiff*rQ r\*nr;vLt. Charles Hood of Warren’s National Guard detachment, explained the 82nd Airborne will be the enemy, invading the national forest by parachute, while the friendly forces assigned to protect the forest will be the Green Berets, to be joined April 19 by the local National Guard units.Local guardsmen will join the guerrilla forces for ten days, April 19-May 3, in lieu of their normal summer camp duty, said Lt. Hood, who added, “The local National Guard units have never gone through anythinglike this before.’’Throughout the month-long war games, men and suppliesv 1! be aird»-nntied throughout the forest.Military evaluators will be on the scene to decide at the end of the operation whether the guerrillas have successfully defended the national forest or whether the invading forces have taken over.Hood said he does not expect the military operation will interfere with civilians and hopes civilians do not interfere with the war games.The Guardsmen requests that any one who may be wandering through the forest and come upon a sniper, drop site or outpost not reveal the location to the opposing army.
