Dogs for Defense, Inc, with the idea of mobilizing canine unitsto be attached to the nation's armedforces.The American Kennel club, however. which may be assumed to be a fairly competent judge in canine matters, has given its approval to the idea. Endorsement of the idea also can be counted on from any hunter who lias watched an intelligent pointer perform in the field.There is no lack of precedent for the plan. The fact is that dogs arc employed in many capacities by the military forces of Britain, Germany Russia and Switzerland. The cx-jpericnce abroad has proved that dogs are especially valuable when trained as sentries because they can detect the approach* of an intruder at a much greater distance than a man can. The more adaptable dogs can even be trained for advanced military signal corps assignments, and, of course, “police dogs. or German shepherds, have long been used as guards.The new organization is planning to set up training centers throughout the country with which breeders and trainers can co-operate.
