In thefighting last October, the platoon ofthe 144th Battalion, to wiiich Breretonwas attached, was suddenly enniadedby the fire of a hostile machine gunbattery. The platoon was in an exposed position and was in danger ofannihilation. Young Brereton, oa hisown initiative, and without a moment’sdelay sprang forward toward the enemy, He shot one of the gunners andbayonetted another one who showedfight.
