uiiu waDurward Wayne Rystrom, 24, son of Mr. and' Mrs. Wayne Rystrom, of Gresham, was selected as an Air Force aviation cadet February 1$ by the Offutt Air Force Base aviation cadet examining board, it was announced today by Colonel Lotha A. Smith, commander of the air base at Fort Crook, Nebraska. Cadet Rystromreceived' the Purple Heart at Ardennes in January, 1945. He served with the Third Army during five European campaigns. He will begin flight training at the 2532nd AFBU, Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Following basic flight training he will be given advanced training either in P-51 Mustangs and' P-80 jet fighters at Williams Air Force Base, Phoenix, Arizona, or in B-17 Flying Fortresses at Barksdale Air Force Base, Shreveport, La. Upon successful completion of the one-year course, he will be commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve with the rating of military pilot. He then will be. placed on active duty for three years and given a chance to compete for a permanent Air Force commission.
