Huey,j shows that there are five, and possibly more, civil war veterans living in Lawrence at the present time. Three of the five survivors are Negroes.John Harrell, 91 year old veteran,; lives with his daughter, Mrs. E. M.| Hobbs at 1129 Connecticut street. S. K. Funk, also 91, lives at 941Connecticut street. Both men are members of the G. A. K. Washing-j ton Post.The three colored survivors are Pompey Mason, 91, of 531 Lyon street; Peter Jones, 96, of 1845 Kentucky street, and Nathan Powell, 88, of 853 Elm street.Mason enlisted in the army at the age of 18 and served two years and six months with 113th Regulars. He came to Lawrence in 1866.Jones enlisted in the artillery corps in March, 1865 at Leavenworth. He has been a resident of Lawrence since 1862. Jones is the only surviving member, as far as is known, of the one time SamuelWalker Post, a negro G.A.R. organization.Powell, another veteran, had been a resident of Lawrence for 60vears.
