jDuivur*NEW ENGLANDHEROES OF THE LAND AND SEALAWRENCE S. McMAHON, WHO SERVED AS CHAPLAIN OF THE 28TH MASSACHUSETTS REGIMENT.Born at Hartford, Conn, Dec 24, 1835. Died atIvtikeville, Conn, Aug 20. 1803.A chaplain not only looks after the spiritual welfare of the men, but .administers to them in their last hours and during trying days of sickness, and in a hundred other ways does a great deal for the morale of the soldiers. A chaplain suffers much the fame as the actual fighters themselvesby long marches and exposure in all sorts of weather.Lawrence Stephen McMahon was stationed in the Cathedral, Boston, w’hen the Civil War began. But when the 28th Massachusetts needed a chaplain he was chosen to fill the place. The 28th Regiment, like the 9th, was made up of men of lrush birth and descent. It was organized at Cambridge in 1861, and was mustered out of service May 30, 1863.Thje regiment took an active part at Manassas, Chantilly and Antietam. As a part of Meagher’s Irish Brigade, it sultered heavy losses at Fredericksburg.Again at Gettysburg the regiment lost heavily, and during the battle of the Wilderness and Bpottsylvania gave an excellent account of itself. In all these battles and in others, heavy burdens fell upon the shoulders of Fr McMahon, but he performed his duties with untiring energy and proved himself every incn a man among men.After the war he was appointed pastor at Bridgeport, Conn, but later was transferred to New Bedford, w-here he built the church of St Lawrence as well as a hospital that was placed under the charge of the Sisters of Mercy.Providence became a separate see in 1870, and Bishop Hendricken appointed Fr McMahon his vicar-general. Some years later he was consecrated bishop.
