I hadn't intended to mention American Legion or VVA .313 membership until this column, 'Why You Should Belong to a Veterans’ Organization.'First, there are many good veterans groups out there. VFW, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA. )Am Vets, Vietnow. DAV, Order of the Purple Heart, Paralyzed Veterans of America. Air Force Sergeant Club and others. Some veterans belong to more than one.I belong to three and I'm entitled to join many others. Some, like the VFW and American Legion, have monthly magazines for paid members.VVA has a paper type magazine that comes out bi-monthly or quarterly. This is where you get updates on the latest news such as medical benefits, financial help, services of all kinds. If you're a veteran and a dues paying member of the organization, you'll receive the magazine. In these publications, you can also find out what’s new, current events, or what services have been dropped or discontinued. It’s also, where you can find more information or who to contact for help if you, need it.Sometimes, you also find out what legislation is pending or passed into law and other things like cuts or increases in funding for veterans.Veterans organizations also have things for families to do and many have auxiliaries for spouses and others so the family can help and get involved. The good thing about getting involved is staying informed. The best way to get help is from veterans. You don't see that much in the media about veterans unless it is sensational such as laptop computers being stolen with veterans’ information on them or maybe highly sensitive tapes missing from a nuclear lab._ V.Does that sound familiar’7As a service officer, 1 get asked quite often by veterans why they didn’t know or hadn’t heard about some thing they needed to know or that would have been helpful. My first question to them is, 'do you belong to a veterans’ organization?’It usually comes back with the same answer, 'no.'1 usually know the answer before I ask just by how much they know about what is going on or what is available.*Next time. I'm going to spend time discussing what a veterans service officer is and does. Also, why you need to see one before you go to the V.A.A new memorial for veterans is in the works in Marshall. Money will be needed to help make it possible. Please contact myself or Cliff Wise, VFW commander. Bob Lake, American Legion, or Terry Ivey,VVA.Until next time, keep your flag flying high and often.Any questions or comments, call me at269-275-9440 or contact the Marshall Chronicle at 781-5444.
