War Dogs, Trained by U. S. Army, Now in Battle AreasTraining stations for dogs and en-gram of the section, which is designated as the K-9 command. Progress to date is notable in view ofthe fact that, except in a few in-WASHINGTON. — War dogs, trained by the United States army,now are in action on several fronts. Reports from troops they are serving with, praise the valor and skill of attack, sentry, messenger, and first a\d dogs in battle. The troopswant more of them.Hundreds of sentry dogs are pa-irolling posts with army guards at forts, ports, motor bases, base commands, and quartermaster depots.listed men to handle them are in operation at posts in Virginia, Ne-j braska, Montana (for sledge dogs), California, and in Hawaii.Thus far only a few thousand dogs are in training and on duty. But the performance of the animals and the demand for them has been such as to cause the Remount branch of the quartermaster corps to augment the facilities and training pro-stances on an experimental scale, the army did not begin to train war dogs until the summer of 1942.It was a civilian group that laid : the foundations for the United States army’s K-9 command. During the World war, Mrs. Milton Erlanger had striven vainly for a dog organization set up along the lines ofthe carrier pigeons used by the armysignal corps. Recently, together with Mr. Harry I. Caesar, and other dog enthusiasts, she established a system for recruiting and training dogsfor army use without cost to the government. Mr. Caesar (Mrs. Erlanger became special consultant on dogs for the remount branch of the quartermaster corps) assumed the presidency of the new organization, Dogs for Defense, Incorporated. Headquarters were established at22 East 60th street, New York city.
